The popcorn bucket for Godzilla Minus Zero isn't a tub with a monster on the side. It is the monster. Fandango put it up on its online store on Wednesday, October 7, as the Kaiju Popcorn Bucket: a full-body Godzilla 19.7 inches tall, 15.75 inches wide and 21.5 inches long, bundled with one free ticket to the film for $100. By Thursday the listing showed it sold out.

Fandango's terms are strict. The bucket ships from October to a US address, shipping is added at checkout, the sale is final and buyers must be 18 or older. The ticket arrives separately, as a promo code, and popcorn isn't included.

How it works

The popcorn goes in through an opening in Godzilla's back, which Fandango's own renders show behind the dorsal fins. Swan Drive-In's online shop, which still had it in stock on Thursday, puts the capacity at 85 ounces and recommends hand washing with warm water, mild soap and a soft sponge. Swan lists it at $94.95 with no ticket, says quantities are limited and promises shipping on or before October 31, ahead of the film.

Where else it showed up

Not every listing stayed up. Essential Japan reports that Cinemark shared promotional material for the bucket, alongside a Heat Ray drink bottle and a popcorn tin, and that Alamo Drafthouse briefly listed the bucket at $90, before both were taken down without explanation. Alamo's product link now sends shoppers to the front page of its shop. Dread Central says Cinemark's version came with an XL popcorn at select theaters while supplies last, with no price given. The bucket was first shown by SATO Company, the film's Brazilian distributor, at the EXPOCINE convention in São Paulo, according to both outlets.

The film itself is Takashi Yamazaki's follow-up to Godzilla Minus One. It opens in Japan on November 3 and in North America on November 6; Dread Central says GKIDS is distributing it there, and Fandango lists it as rated R with a running time of 2 hours 15 minutes. For collectors, the bucket comes first: Fandango's sold out with four weeks to go.
