Third ready-to-wear collection at the house
💬

Pierpaolo Piccioli showed his third Balenciaga ready-to-wear collection in Paris on Thursday, October 1. He called it Les Coraux de la Liberté, the corals of freedom, a title Balenciaga repeated on its own Instagram posts of the show. Its show film on Instagram credits the title work, "Les Coraux de la Liberté," to the artist Aude Franjou, courtesy of Maison Parisienne Gallery, and W describes an abstract sculpture by Franjou on the runway.

The house kept the colour back at first. W Magazine writes that the opening looks were entirely white, calling to mind Piccioli's famed PP Pink and the all-black final collection he showed at Valentino, and that the palette then opened up with blue and red against the white before moving into the full colour he is known for. The soundtrack was The Fugees' "Ready or Not" with Lauryn Hill in the front row.

Coral is the organising idea. Complex, citing Lampoon, reports the red Mediterranean coral Corallium rubrum grows only a few millimetres a year and never produces two identical branches, and that this drove the mix of sheer and firm fabrics. Complex also reports that Neo Gazar, the stiff silk Piccioli revived in July, came back as both outer fabric and inner structure in a semi-fitted suit, a tunic, a sack dress, a cocoon coat and a balloon skirt.

The clothes are everyday ones. W describes sporty high-neck jackets and balloon trousers in technical fabrics, the athleisure-adjacent shapes that made the house commercially successful under Demna, next to soft tailoring and dramatic shapes. It lists trapeze trousers with belted jacket tops, shirt dresses that close diagonally across the body, drop-shoulder jackets with split cocoon sleeves over high-low feathered skirts, and peplum hems on leather moto jackets and T-shirt blouses.

The collection notes, as W reports them, call the collection an investigation of couture as a working method, and say stitching taken from the internal structure of tailoring is what gives volume to cotton T-shirts and leather jackets. W reads it as more casual than Piccioli's first spring show, with the notes framing the point as freedom of gesture, movement and choice.

The subtext in Paris is whether this was his last show. W says there has been talk this season about whether Spring 2027 would be his last for the house, and that neither Balenciaga nor its parent Kering has addressed it. We found nothing from either to confirm it. Complex notes the trade press has framed the week around designers reaching their third outing at major houses, with Piccioli alongside Jonathan Anderson at Dior (see Dior's Spring 2027 show), Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez at Loewe.

Front-row guests, per W, included Sarah Pidgeon, Havana Rose Liu, Shailene Woodley, Isabelle Huppert, Gemma Chan and Brooklyn Beckham.
