A.P.C. and Barbour's collection went on sale on Friday, October 16, at 10am in Paris and 9am in London, online and in stores worldwide, as A.P.C. announced the day before. The split is the obvious one, and both brands say so: Barbour brings its waxed cotton, A.P.C. brings its denim. A.P.C. files it as one of its Interactions, the name it gives its collaborations, and describes a collection "rooted in waxed cotton and denim", two workwear fabrics that both take on the shape of whoever wears them.

The wax

Barbour's side is its signature jackets, some in a new fabric. It says it developed a Thornproof Wax from its archive styles: a dense woven cotton base built so the wax soaks deep into the cloth, used on the Beaufort and the Bedale. The Beaufort comes with a tonal A.P.C. Barbour embroidery on the left pocket, at $895 on barbour.com and €769 on A.P.C.'s store. The Spey, which Barbour says it first made in 1980 as a lightweight fishing jacket, is $650 and €499. A.P.C. also lists a long version of the Bedale in Sugarlump at €799, and Barbour sells a matching zip-in quilted liner at $345 (€249).

The denim

A.P.C.'s side is cut in denim: a trucker jacket (€390), the Elisabeth straight-leg jean ($390, €290), the Jean Standard (€290), a mini skirt ($255, €190) and a weekender holdall ($175). In Barbour's campaign the trucker is worn with its cuffs turned back to show a Barbour tartan lining. The tartan comes back on a Monogram Tartan Shirt in cotton Oxford, embroidered all over with A.P.C. branding ($350, €279), a quilted crossbody bag ($170, €149) and a cap (€64.90).

The rest fills out the wardrobe: tees with the two names stacked on the chest (€120, or $165 for the women's tee in the US), a sweatshirt (€220), a wax bucket hat (€79.90), a wax cap and a waxed Tarras bag (€299). There's footwear too, wellingtons, clogs and slippers, which we'll leave to the sister site.

The read

What's striking is how little either side changed. The jackets keep their Barbour names, and A.P.C.'s mark shows up as tonal embroidery and stamped buttons rather than a new shape; the denim stays A.P.C.'s cuts, with Barbour's tartan tucked inside, under the trucker's collar, in its pockets and in the Elisabeth's waistband. That restraint suits A.P.C., whose pitch has always been plain clothes that get better with wear, and it lands a month after the label's collection with Gap.

One thing worth noticing before you buy: the same pieces cost noticeably more on Barbour's US site than on A.P.C.'s euro store, $895 against €769 for the Beaufort and $350 against €279 for the shirt. Neither brand has said how many of each it made.
