Rei Kawakubo showed Comme des Garçons' Spring 2027 women's collection in Paris on Saturday, October 3. Both reviews we read describe giant sculptural shapes and a crown or crown-shaped headpiece on the models.
Her only explanation, as WWD reports it, was one line: "When royal life and everyday life become one." WWD notes that Kawakubo, who often reaches for rich fabrics like brocade, satin and lace, chose plain ones here, mainly denim, including railroad-stripe and pinstripe versions, and cotton gabardine. Nearly every model wore a tall crown made of fabric.
Volume, trims and the finale
The shapes ran far beyond the body. WWD names snowman, violin and guitar shapes, and says some pieces were so wide that models had to turn sideways to get along the narrow runway, brushing skirts as they crossed. It still made out trench, bomber and puffer jackets underneath. PAP Magazine says the volume at shoulders, waist and hips ran several times past the body, and singles out a navy denim piece with red serrated ruffles, red polka-dot frills and a pink striped overcoat worn with a cream dress.
WWD says the sturdy fabrics took some of the usual prettiness out of the clothes, while gold braid, passementerie and hair, set into the folds and across the skirts, pointed to ceremonial dress. For the finale the crowns gave way to foil domes, and the models wore oversized denim shorts, barrel trousers and wide jeans whose hems trailed on the floor.
The one-line explanation is the useful part. Crowns and denim are the two ends of the idea, formal rank and the most ordinary cloth, and the clothes make the case by putting them on the same body.
