Burberry's partnership with Highgrove, the King's garden in Gloucestershire, has a new capsule, and this one carries the King's own painting. Five Highgrove x Burberry pieces went up on Highgrove's online shop on the morning of October 13, led by a silk scarf printed with what Highgrove calls an original watercolour by His Majesty The King of Birkhall, his house on the Balmoral Estate in Scotland. Burberry posted the scarf on Instagram the same morning.

The Birkhall Silk Scarf is a 90cm silk-twill square with hand-rolled edges, its painting framed by Burberry's House Check in what the shop calls an exclusive bay green. It costs £375. Every page in the capsule says all proceeds support The King's Foundation, the King's charity.

The outerwear

The painting turns up again on the coats, as an appliqué inspired by it on a detachable wool-cashmere warmer. The men's Tottenham Car Coat (£1,890) and the women's Waterloo Trench Coat (£2,490) are both made in England from shower-resistant, organically grown cotton gabardine in a colour Burberry calls marsh green, the trench lined in the matching check. The women's Broadway Quilt Jacket (£1,390) is water-resistant quilted nylon with a corduroy collar, the bay-green check inside and the same appliqué.

The fifth piece is Burberry's Wide Check cashmere scarf in bay green, at £555, which the shop says is made in Scotland at a mill founded in 1797, woven on traditional looms and brushed with teasels.

The read

Highgrove and Burberry have done this before: the shop still lists earlier pieces it calls the fourth capsule, a trench, a Harrington and silk scarves printed with the British artist Helen Bullock's drawings of the Kitchen Garden. Swapping a hired illustrator for the King himself is the step up. It ties Burberry to the monarch's own hand at a time when the brand is leaning on its British heritage, from its 170th-anniversary portraits to the Celia Birtwell runway show.

It's still a charity line sold through a garden shop, priced in pounds, rather than a Burberry release. Neither Highgrove nor Burberry has said whether the pieces will reach Burberry's own stores or site.
