The LEGO Group and Daft Punk announced a partnership on Thursday, October 22, covering products, content and what LEGO calls brand experiences. The first product is already decided: a LEGO Ideas set of the pyramid stage from Daft Punk's 2007 Alive tour, which LEGO has now greenlit and moved into development. There is no price, piece count or release date yet.

The set began as a fan submission. Patrick Harboun, a builder from Luxembourg, designed it with his son, and it won the Grand Prize in LEGO Ideas' Music to Our Ears challenge in 2020 before reaching 10,000 supporters on the platform, the mark at which LEGO Ideas puts a fan design up for review. "This all started as a creative escape during lockdown between my son and I because of our shared love of Daft Punk and LEGO building," Harboun said in LEGO's announcement.

The rollout

LEGO teased it the day before. On October 21, listeners to the "Daft Punk - WDPK 83.7" radio stream got a 30-second clip of a red 2x4 LEGO brick shot from behind, its three tubes standing in for speaker woofers, with no explanation. The announcement film followed on Thursday: the duo as minifigures follow a holographic red brick until the world builds itself around them and they end up behind a brick-built console, set to "Voyager" from Discovery and "Human After All", the title track of the 2005 album.

Cédric Hervet, Daft Punk's creative director, called the pyramid "one of the most recognisable expressions of Daft Punk's visual world". Julia Goldin, LEGO's chief product and marketing officer, said "This is just the beginning of a bigger journey", and the release promises more events and content across music and culture, with "more to come in 2027".

The read

The interesting part is who did the design work. LEGO is building the partnership around a fan's model rather than one from its own studio, which is the whole pitch of LEGO Ideas and an easy one for Daft Punk, whose image has always been built from the stage, the helmets and the visuals as much as the records. It also gives LEGO a music license for the adult-collector shelf, the same buyer it has been chasing with sets like Dragon Ball's Shenron and Goku.

What's still open: the photo LEGO released is the fan model, marked as not the final product, so the set's size and finish will change in development. LEGO hasn't given a piece count, a price or a date, and we'll add them when it does.
