LEGO has made Godzilla. The LEGO Ideas Godzilla set, number 21375, was announced on Tuesday, November 3, and goes on sale on Friday, November 27, the Black Friday weekend, at LEGO.com/Godzilla and LEGO Stores. It costs $449.99, £349.99 or €399.99, and LEGO calls it the first-ever LEGO set featuring Godzilla, in the version from Legendary's Monsterverse films.

It's big. At 5,363 pieces, LEGO says it is the largest LEGO Ideas model it has ever launched, and posed with its Heat Ray it stands over 27.5 inches (70cm) tall, about 10.5 inches wide and 15.5 inches long. The release says a minifigure only comes up to Godzilla's ankle. Nearly every joint moves, down to the fingers, and a Heat Ray piece swaps in for the tongue so the figure can roar straight up. It's rated 18+.

A fan's design

The model started as a fan submission. Matthew Esposito, a builder from New York who posts on LEGO Ideas as MattE720, put the design on the platform, where it passed 10,000 votes and was then approved by the LEGO Ideas Review Board. In the release he calls it a passion project and says the head was the hardest part to get right.

The design is Godzilla as Legendary's Monsterverse films draw him; Toho owns the Godzilla trademark. Anyone who buys it between November 27 and 30 gets a 359-piece Godzilla Logo and Footprint set (40888) while supplies last, and LEGO Insiders in some markets can enter a sweepstake to win a signed set.

Our read

LEGO picked its moment. The reveal fell on Godzilla Day, November 3, and LEGO says the launch lines up with the theatrical release of Toho's Godzilla Minus Zero, which opens in North America on November 6. That film has already given us a sold-out Godzilla Minus Zero popcorn bucket and a Lacoste collection drawn by its director. The model itself isn't the Minus Zero Godzilla, though: it's Legendary's American design, so LEGO gets the attention around the new film without a set that dates with it. At $449.99 and rated 18+, it's built for adult collectors who want something to put on a sideboard, which is exactly how LEGO's photos show it.
