AVIREX Rebuilds Its MA-1 as Evangelion's Mark.06, and RADIO EVA Is Already Sold Out

RADIO EVA, Evangelion's official apparel label, has handed one of AVIREX's flight jackets to three of the series' Evas. The EVANGELION MA-1 REMODEL by AVIREX comes in black for Unit-01, red for Unit-02 and navy for Mark.06, each at ¥77,000 (about $490), as part of RADIO EVA's "THE 30" collaboration series, which has also brought in SEIKO, FILA, KANGOL, CA4LA and Manhattan Portage.

The base isn't a stock MA-1. It's AVIREX's MA-1 REMODEL MARK II, the brand's own reworked flight jacket, with a detachable hood carrying a cowhide leather patch. RADIO EVA's listing says each version gets a lining and reflector tape matched to its unit, plus details meant to evoke rescue gear, with stencil prints over the rest. The shell is nylon, the lining and fill polyester, and the ribbing acrylic.

The navy Mark.06 is the one built most like a uniform. AVIREX and MARK.06 are stenciled across the back over a reflective strip, MARK.06 repeats on the chest and sleeve, and the lining is bright orange. Under the collar, an orange stencil reads "Jacket: Flying Suit for Aviators," followed by classification and contract numbers credited to the AVIREX Manufacturing Corporation.

Mark.06 is the Eva Kaworu Nagisa rides down from the Moon at the end of 2009's Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, so it makes sense that Kaworu fronts this one: RADIO EVA's artwork has him in the navy jacket, a cap and cargo pants.

The other two follow the same template in their own colors. Unit-01's black jacket has a lavender hood and a big 01 on the chest; Unit-02's red one has a yellow hood and an 02.

Getting one is the hard part. RADIO EVA announced the jackets on its online store on September 12, and as of September 22, every size of all three versions, M through XXL, is marked sold out there, with only a sign-up for restock alerts. Hypebeast and Fullress both give September 26 as the release date, and Fullress also lists mix.tokyo, the official online store that carries AVIREX in Japan. Neither brand has said whether more stock is coming.

It isn't the only Japanese pop-culture crossover this month built on real outerwear rather than a graphic tee: Balenciaga and SEGA put Sonic on a varsity jacket, and Carnival's Tekken collection, led by a racing jacket, lands the same day as this one.
