Polo Ralph Lauren Redrew Its 1992 P-WING Around a 'B' for BEAMS's 50th Anniversary

BEAMS turns 50 this year, and Polo Ralph Lauren is marking it with a new emblem. The B-WING Collection, which BEAMS announced on September 28, goes on sale Friday, October 2, at BEAMS and BEAMS BOY stores across Japan (BEAMS says some regions are excluded) and on the BEAMS online shop. BEAMS hasn't given a time, and neither brand has announced a release outside Japan.

It starts with the P-WING, the emblem from Polo's 1992 Stadium Collection, a line BEAMS describes as inspired by vintage track-and-field uniforms and American sports culture. Polo Ralph Lauren redrew it for BEAMS as the B-WING, keeping the P-WING's design codes but building it around the B of BEAMS. On the clothes it's a red winged foot over a navy block B, done in navy, red and white. BEAMS calls it a new symbol made for this project that still pays homage to the archive.

There are six B-WING pieces. The letterman jacket, in Hunter Navy with tan sleeves and a Ralph Lauren signature by the pocket, is the big one at ¥165,000. The rest: a white Oxford button-down with the emblem on its chest pocket (¥35,200), Andrews pants in RL Khaki scattered with small B-WINGs (¥41,800), a short-sleeve tee in Newport Navy or white (¥18,700), a long-bill cap in navy or red (¥17,600) and a navy scarf (¥31,900).

BEAMS

A second round of POLO BEAMS pieces lands the same day: a short-sleeve polo (¥25,300), a heavyweight crewneck sweatshirt (¥28,600) and socks (¥3,300). Every item in both lines carries a "BEAMS 50th Anniversary Edition" label.

Polo has been part of BEAMS's anniversary all year. In January BEAMS reissued the JAPANORAK, a Japan-flag jacket Polo first designed in 2010, at ¥141,900, and on April 18 the first round of POLO BEAMS pieces went on sale as the 17th installment of BEAMS's 50th Anniversary Collection. The B-WING lands a week after the Arc'teryx × BEAMS KOYO collection, another anniversary release.

Most anniversary collaborations put the retailer's name on a partner's product. This one goes a step further: Polo gave BEAMS its own version of an archive emblem, the kind of graphic people still hunt for on 1992 Stadium pieces. The B-WING isn't a reissue, though. It's a new mark on new clothes, sold only through BEAMS, which makes it a tribute to a 50-year relationship rather than a way into the archive.
