Coperni is closing. Its founders, Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer, said on Wednesday, November 4, that Coperni SAS, the Paris company behind the label, is ceasing operations, after months of trying to settle a conflict with its shareholder and distributor, Tomorrow.

"Over the past few months, we have tried everything to preserve Coperni and find a resolution to the conflict with our shareholder and distributor, Tomorrow," they wrote in a statement posted in English and French on Coperni's Instagram. "Despite all our efforts, no solution could be found. It is with profound sadness that we announce today that Coperni SAS is ceasing operations."

The statement thanks the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, stores, buyers, press, models and "our teams and the factories", and looks back on "these eight years". It signs off "See you soon", which leaves the door open for whatever the two do next, but it doesn't say what that is, or what happens to the Coperni name.

How it got here

Tomorrow, the London group that FashionUnited described in March as co-owner of Martine Rose and Charles Jeffrey Loverboy too, is Coperni's majority shareholder and exclusive distributor. Coperni skipped Paris Fashion Week in March, and its founders put that down to their relationship with Tomorrow. The same month, Tomorrow itself was bought by Progetto 11, the Italian holding company of the online retailer The Level Group.

On June 11, the Paris Commercial Court opened receivership proceedings for Coperni, with an observation period running to December 11, FashionUnited reported in June; the label put its cash-flow problems down to sums Tomorrow owed it, not weaker sales. Hypebeast reports that Tomorrow ended its licensing agreement amid unpaid debts and that the founders tried to buy the brand back. FashionUnited now reports that Coperni has been placed into compulsory liquidation.

Coperni's statement doesn't mention liquidation, and no report gives the date of a liquidation ruling, so how the receivership ends isn't confirmed yet.

Our read

Coperni built its name on moments: the dress sprayed onto Bella Hadid on the runway in 2022, a show at Disneyland Paris in October 2024. Those got the label further than its size, but a young brand whose shareholder is also its distributor has nowhere to go when that relationship breaks, and that's the story here more than the clothes. It's also one to watch for the rest of Tomorrow's stable under its new owner, Martine Rose included.
