Needles has made its first collection with Pendleton, and it went on sale in Japan on Saturday, October 24 at 11:30am. Nepenthes, the Tokyo company behind Needles, lists six pieces in its posts, built on Pendleton's plaids and patterns: a Shawl Collar Coat in wool plaid melton (¥170,500), a Pen Jacket (¥82,500), a Classic Shirt (¥55,000) and H.D. Pant (¥56,100) in wool plaid, a Cowichan Sweater (¥104,500) and a Mohair Sweater in Pendleton's Harding pattern (¥90,200). FASHIONSNAP, which called it the brands' first collaboration, says it sells at Nepenthes' own stores and online shop, and Pendleton Japan's online store put four of the pieces up at the same minute, in sizes M and L.
Pendleton's product pages fill in the build. The coat is 100% wool plaid with a heavy fleece collar, leather-look covered buttons, cuff straps and hand-warmer pockets, lined in quilted, padded purple, Needles' signature colour. The shirt has an open collar, two flap chest pockets, lambskin elbow patches and a purple cupra lining across the yoke, and is made in Japan. The Cowichan zips up the front under a shawl collar and is fully lined in cupra, and the mohair sweater carries the Harding pattern on its front, back and both sleeves. Both knits wear a Needles tag at the hem and a Pendleton tag at the neck.
A season of partners
Pendleton is the latest in a long run of outside names for Needles this Fall/Winter. Nepenthes' own feature pages list FILA at the end of July, Brooks Brothers and TW in early September, Sorel later that month, Tailor Toyo and Sun Surf, and A Tribe Called Quest a week before this one.
Our read: Pendleton fits Needles better than most of that list. Needles has spent years remaking American workwear and Western clothing through a Japanese lens, and Pendleton is the source those clothes were borrowing from, an American wool mill whose logo on the campaign photos reads "Pendleton Woolen Mills, since 1863". So the collection mostly leaves the cloth alone and changes the cut: the wide H.D. Pant, the boxy shirt and the long shawl-collar coat are Needles shapes, and the purple lining in the coat, shirt and Cowichan is how you tell. At ¥170,500, the coat costs more than three of the shirts.
What's still open
Everything we can find is Japanese: Nepenthes, Pendleton Japan and FASHIONSNAP. Neither brand has said whether the collection reaches Nepenthes America or Pendleton's US store, or how many of each piece were made.
