Anthony Vaccarello showed Saint Laurent's Spring/Summer 2027 women's collection on Tuesday, September 29, outdoors at the Trocadéro fountain, with the Eiffel Tower lit gold behind the runway. Reuters noted the show marked ten years since his first for the Kering-owned house, and that it came amid reports he is set to step down. Saint Laurent has not confirmed a departure in anything we could find, so that part stays a report.
The collection was one colour. Reuters described gold dresses with raised embroidery, gold brocade skirts, jackets with sharp collars and gold trench coats, and WWD listed the fabrics that carried it: lamé, organza, guipure lace, chiffon, brocade, jacquard, metallic cotton and latex. Numéro counted 49 silhouettes in gold before the show turned to black, and said the house's archetypes, the safari jackets, trenches, blouses and wrap skirts from Yves Saint Laurent's own era, sat beside Vaccarello's own signatures like big-shouldered coats and cropped fur-trimmed suits.
The colour is the idea. Vaccarello has built recent seasons on a few silhouettes repeated, and Numéro's read is that this time colour, not cut, did the repeating. WWD saw the gold turn brownish, reddish and foil-like, in crinkled, pleated and ruffled textures. That is a hard trick to pull off across a full show, and it is also easy to sell: a gold trench is still a trench.
Then came the ending. A dozen black looks closed the show, WWD reported, led by Anja Rubik in an 1980s-style velvet skirt suit, followed by black gowns with billowing sleeves and long trains. Charlotte Gainsbourg performed a song at the finale in a classic Saint Laurent black suit, and Vaccarello came out to a standing ovation. Front-row guests included Rosé, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Eddie Redmayne and Rami Malek, per Reuters, and WWD added Kate Moss, Catherine Deneuve and Zoë Kravitz.
WWD said Vaccarello skipped his usual backstage interviews and sent journalists flowers and a handwritten note instead, saying the collection had been in his mind for a long time and was personal, and that he would rather let people experience it than explain it. It is a strange way to handle a season if you are staying, which is why most of the coverage read the show as a farewell. None of them, including Reuters and Numéro, could say it was one.
The business context is the reason it matters. Reuters credits Vaccarello with expanding Saint Laurent's reach, and says the brand's revenues fell 6% last year, before Kering said in July that it had returned to growth in the first half. A house that size does not lose its creative director quietly. If the reports are right, the next Saint Laurent creative director inherits a house at a moment when designers are still stamping new signatures on the big houses, as Jonathan Anderson did at Dior the same day and Demna is doing at Gucci.
