Anderson .Paak and Cordae Finally Made the Album Their Three Features Were Building To

Anderson .Paak and Cordae released "A Good Day" on September 16, the first single from Heavy Is the Crown, a joint album due October 23 via APESHIT + EMPIRE / Hi Level + Mass Appeal. It's the first time the two have put out music as a billed pair rather than one guesting on the other's track — a shift in status seven years in the making.

The song itself is built around a sample of Bill Withers' 1977 record "Lovely Day" and leans on the kind of hype-man ad-libs Fatman Scoop made his signature (Scoop died in August 2024; the track works his style into the mix rather than featuring him). .Paak and Cordae trade bars over it in the easy, uptempo register both artists work in when they're not carrying a song alone.

The video, directed by Dave Meyers and starring Jennifer Freeman, plays it as a homage to the 1995 comedy Friday: .Paak and Cordae are brothers competing for the same love interest, playing the rivalry for laughs while the two still read as close.

Three features, then a full album

The pairing goes back to "RNP," a J. Cole-produced track off Cordae's 2019 debut The Lost Boy that the two performed on Fallon and at that year's BET Hip Hop Awards. They returned for "Two Tens" in January 2023 (also J. Cole, with Dem Jointz) and "Summer Drop" in August 2024 (J. Cole again, with Free Nationals bassist Kelsey González) — both released as Cordae singles with .Paak as the feature, both later folded into Cordae's 2024 album The Crossroads. Heavy Is the Crown is the first time the partnership gets its own name on the cover instead of one artist's — a joint album with two co-leads, not a guest feature stretched across a full tracklist.

The album's physical release leans into the same bit as the video: the cover art restages the poster for the 2008 comedy Step Brothers, with .Paak and Cordae in matching argyle sweaters before the artwork's alternate version shows them mid-fight. It comes in six retailer-exclusive vinyl variants, an animated zoetrope edition sold direct, plus cassette and CD, the CD's lenticular cover flipping between the two images.

None of this reads as two rappers cashing in a familiar chemistry for one more feature. Going from a guest verse to a co-billed album, with a bit sturdy enough to build a rollout around, is a bigger commitment than another one-off — and worth watching whether the rest of Heavy Is the Crown keeps the same easy, comic register "A Good Day" opens with.
