BUNNEY, the London jewellery brand Andrew Bunney founded in 2009, has put a collection with Martine Rose on sale on its own site, and it is built on the most disposable thing in a pub: the bottle top. BUNNEY describes it as familiar objects from pubs, clubs and community halls turned into precious-metal jewellery and objects, with the crimped edge of a bottle cap carried through the pieces alongside the dimpled pint glass and the bottle opener.
The badge, earrings, rings and the miniature cap on the chains all carry the same face, a bottle cap stamped EXPECT PERFECTION around a triangle holding BUNNEY's rabbit logo, with ROSE and MARTINE underneath; the bottle opener has EXPECT PERFECTION engraved around its head instead. BUNNEY says the collection is produced in the United Kingdom using traditional techniques.
The pieces and prices
The cheapest way in isn't jewellery at all: a traditional dimpled one-pint glass with the collection's printed graphic, at £55. In sterling silver, there's a 28mm bottle-top badge with a bent, opened edge at £430, matching 15mm earrings at £475, a heavy signet ring at £540, a bracelet with a miniature bottle top and opener on a hook clasp at £695 (17, 19 or 21cm), and the matching 60cm necklace at £715. A 15cm silver bottle opener on a short chain and keyring, reinforced so it actually works, is £1,235.
The signet ring also comes in silver with 18ct yellow gold at £1,625 and in solid 18ct yellow gold at £13,700. The bracelet and necklace are listed in 18ct gold too, without a price on BUNNEY's site.
Our read
This is Martine Rose doing in metal what she does in clothes: taking the stuff of an ordinary London weekend, the pub, the club, the community hall, and treating it as worth keeping. Her own site lists a run of collaborations with Napapijri, Clarks, Nike, Stüssy, Tommy Jeans and Supreme, most recently Supreme x Martine Rose this month, and they are mostly clothing and shoes. Fine jewellery is a different register, and BUNNEY, whose whole pitch is English workshops and hand finishing, suits it. The price spread does the rest: a £55 glass sits on the same page as a £13,700 ring, so the idea works at either end.
What's not settled is the launch itself. Neither brand has given a release date; Hypebeast, which calls the collection "The Bottle Top", says it arrives in October through BUNNEY, Martine Rose and select stockists, but Martine Rose's own shop doesn't list the pieces yet. For now, bunney.co.uk is where the collection is confirmed on sale.
