Calvin Klein Went Longer and Quieter at New York's First Fur-Free Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week opened on September 10 under a rule it had never had before. Starting this season, the CFDA no longer permits animal fur in collections on the official schedule — mink, fox, rabbit, karakul lamb, chinchilla, coyote and raccoon dog are all out, with an exemption for fur obtained by Indigenous communities through traditional subsistence hunting. The policy was announced last December. "Consumers are moving away from products associated with animal cruelty, and we want to position American fashion as a leader," CFDA president and CEO Steven Kolb said at the time.

It made a fitting backdrop for the most disciplined show of the opening days. On Thursday, Veronica Leoni presented Calvin Klein Collection's Spring/Summer 2027 at Terminal Warehouse, a block-long brick building in New York dating to 1891, with three floor sculptures by Walter De Maria set along the runway so that models and audience had to move around them.

Leoni was plain about the brief. "American Minimalism was a discipline of removal: take away everything that does not carry the work, until only what is necessary remains," she said. "Calvin drew from that and turned it toward the body. I turn it toward the woman inside it."

The clothes held to it. Leoni worked from the garments the house was built on — the coat, the shirt, tailoring, the trouser, the pencil skirt, the slip — and stretched the proportions, running them longer and narrower or pulling them in at the waist.

Slim three-button cotton suits sat against broader-shouldered layered jackets, and bias-cut slips and t-shirt dresses were styled as eveningwear.

The pieces likely to travel furthest are the plainest ones. Silk knit tees and color-blocked baseball shirts are categories streetwear has owned for years, and watching them run through a collection this strict is a reminder of where minimalism actually ends up: not on a runway in a landmark warehouse, but in the expensive-looking basics everyone buys a few seasons later.

Kid Harpoon scored the show, a soundtrack built on long, repeating phrases with Laurie Anderson and Solange. Solange was in the room too, alongside ROSALÍA, Teyana Taylor, Tate McRae and Sadie Sink.

The official schedule runs through September 15, when Thom Browne closes it out. Between the fur rule and Leoni's show, the week's opening days already had a theme: take things out, and see what's left.
