PlayStation says it's bringing see-through controllers back. The Prism Collection, announced on the PlayStation Blog on October 28, is a set of transparent DualSense wireless controllers and matching PS5 console covers in three colours: Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray, each with a glossy finish. Pre-orders open on November 10 at 10am local time, and the collection launches starting February 4, 2027.

The controller is $84.99 in the US, £74.99 in the UK, €84.99 in Europe and ¥12,480 in Japan, and it will be sold worldwide. The console covers are $74.99, £64.99, €74.99 and ¥9,980, and they're harder to get: PlayStation sells them only directly, in the US, the UK and nine European countries, and elsewhere in limited quantities through select retailers. In the US, pre-orders open on direct.playstation.com at 10am Eastern.

What the designers say

PlayStation put two people from its Color, Material, and Finish design team on the record. "We know how much our fans have been looking forward to the return of transparent controllers," Leo Cardoso said. "We wanted to bring back the iconic see-through trend of the late '90s in a fresh, modern way that complements the PS5's industrial design."

Satoshi Aoyagi said the clear high-gloss finish runs across the back of the controller as well, "offering a look at the technology that powers the DualSense controller while maintaining a sleek, monochromatic look", while the middle cover has a metallic finish. He described the three colours as an orange that takes on a rosy hue where the clear material overlaps, a deep hunter green and a cool storm grey. In PlayStation's own renders, the orange reads close to red.

The read

The price is the tell. $84.99 is the same recommended price PlayStation set for LISA's limited-edition DualSense, which comes out on October 30, so a see-through shell is priced like a celebrity collaboration. The covers are the scarcer half: sold only through PlayStation's own store in the countries it serves, and they're what it takes to make the console match the controller. And the wait is long. Pre-orders open in under two weeks, but nothing ships until February, past the holidays. PlayStation hasn't said which PS5 models the covers fit.
