BEAMS BOY Gives Needles' H.D. Track Pant and New Crew Ivy League Colours

BEAMS BOY has its own version of Needles' track gear on the way. The Needles x BEAMS BOY special track series, two pieces in six colours, goes on sale on Thursday, November 12, at BEAMS stores across Japan that carry BEAMS BOY, a few excepted, and on BEAMS' online shop. BEAMS announced it on October 29 and ran the campaign on its Instagram on Sunday, and both pieces are already on pre-order online.

The trousers are Needles' popular H.D. track pant, the cut named for its knees (BEAMS lists it as the velvet H.D. track pant), made here in velour with a soft sheen and drape, at ¥31,900 in black, brown or navy. The top is new: the Hijideru crew, named for its rounded, puffed elbows, designed from scratch for BEAMS BOY, BEAMS says, taking its cue from the H.D. pant, in a smooth polyester jersey, at ¥23,100 in light grey, charcoal grey or olive. Both are one size, and prices include tax.

The colours are the idea. BEAMS BOY took them from the school colours of six Ivy League colleges, BEAMS says, and chose every combination itself: the body, the track stripes and the butterfly embroidered on the chest. No two pieces share a colour, so the six can be worn as matched sets or mixed, which is how the campaign shows them, on a lacrosse field with the sticks to match.

BEAMS started BEAMS BOY in 1998 for women drawn to the toughness and back story of menswear, and Needles' track pant is menswear with a back story. Our read: the colours are the easy part, and the crew is what makes this more than a colourway, since it's a shape made for one label. The H.D. is having a busy autumn: it was also one of the six pieces in Needles' first collection with Pendleton, in wool plaid, on October 24.

Anyone who wants one online may already be late. BEAMS' online shop lists both pieces as pre-orders, with delivery given as early November, and by Sunday afternoon every colour of the crew and the black pants showed none left there; the brown and navy pants could still be ordered. Stores get their stock on November 12. BEAMS hasn't said anything about a release outside Japan.
