Charli xcx has been wearing second-hand clothes bought on Vinted on her Music, Fashion, Film tour, and from Monday, November 16, she sells part of her own wardrobe on the app. Vinted announced the partnership on October 27. The sale runs on Vinted in the UK, the US and Australia, and every dollar it raises goes to Rainbow Railroad, the international charity that gets LGBTQI+ people out of places where they're persecuted.
Her longtime stylist Chris Horan sourced the tour pieces from Vinted sellers, searching terms including "distressed," "gothic" and "flounce." Vinted names a few. At Austin City Limits she wore a dress made from an early-2000s Christian Audigier piece; in San Diego, a sheer grey blouse; and a black Roberto Cavalli dress went to the Academy Gala after-party in Los Angeles and back out for the last show, in Las Vegas. One find is still waiting for the stage: a full-length Donna Karan gown with a bird appliqué.
"Vintage and second-hand are a huge part of my style. Chris and I love mixing older, iconic pieces with newer things. I think it makes a look feel more personal to me and always takes us to a more unexpected place," Charli says in Vinted's release.
What's in the sale
On November 16 the sale opens with three kinds of clothes: what she wore on tour, things Horan found second-hand, and pieces from her own archive, among them an R&M Leathers leather jacket and some vintage T-shirts. "Some were found on Vinted in the first place, worn on stage, and are now going back out into the world. Which feels like a full circle," she says. A week before, on November 8, her social channels premiere a behind-the-scenes video of her and Horan trying on what they bought. And it runs the other way too: any Vinted seller can add #charlixcx to a listing so the two of them see it when they shop for her next looks.
The read
Most celebrity closet sales are about the star's clothes. This one is also about where they came from: the selling point is that a pop star's stage wardrobe came off ordinary listings, which is the best advert a resale app can buy, and the hashtag turns every seller into a possible stylist's pull. It fits how Charli already dresses, down to the wedding dress she reworked for the "Rock Music" video, which Vinted's release cites. What Vinted hasn't said is how many pieces are in the sale, what they'll cost, or which tour looks are among them.
